Ruling on a suit between Mallam Nasir El-Rufai and Today’s Publishing Company Limited, a Kaduna State High Court has ordered the arrest of Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) Chairman, Muhammed Isah, for contempt of court.
The Judge who ordered the police to arrest the CCB Chairman and make him appear in court on February 13, 2019, ruled on the case after Today Publishing Company, publisher of The Union Newspapers, filed an application requesting the court to subpoena the CCB chair to produce the governor’s asset declaration in the court.
Governor Nasir El-Rufai had sued the newspaper, claiming it made a false publication about his asset declaration. The CCB Chairman had failed to honour different summons of the court, hence the order for his arrest.
The Kaduna State Governor had sued the newspaper and its reporter in Kaduna, when the medium published that he declared assets worth N90 billion, including 40 mansions, scattered across the country. However testifying in court in 2017, El-Rufai who was led in evidence by his counsel, A. U. Mustapha, that he was in court to seek justice over the attempt by the publishers of The Union to scandalize him. During cross-examination by counsel to the defence, El-Rufai affirmed that he declared his assets as governor-elect, as mandated by the constitution, prior to taking the oath of office as Governor of Kaduna State.
